The International Safety Managemnet Code became law on July 1st 1998. The ISM code has a major impact on management and requires shipping companies to make considerable changes to their company structure. These changes emphasize the role of sound management in safety and polution and compel the operators of sub-standard ships to improve their ships and management systems.

One of the stated advantages of the ISM Code certification process is that it implements procedures which may eventually reduce operating costs without detracting from the quality or the operation. Surveys of companies that have implemented Safety Management Systems show that substantial savings are possible:

6% to 10% in P&I premius
10%-15% reduction in the cost of hull and machinery insurance
15%- 25% reduction in hospital hours
25%-35% reduction in lost man hours
